here are some verses from the Quran and Hadiths that emphasize the importance of justice in Islam:

  1. Quran, Surah Nisa, Verse 135 “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.”
  2. Quran, Surah Al-Maidah, Verse 8 “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is acquainted with what you do.”
  3. Quran, Surah An-Nahl, Verse 90 “Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.”
  4. Hadith from Sahih Bukhari “O people, beware of injustice, for injustice shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment.”
  5. Hadith from Sunan Ibn Majah “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is oppressed.’ People asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we help him if he is oppressed, but how do we help him if he is an oppressor?’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘By preventing him from oppressing others.'”
  6. Hadith from Sahih Muslim “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘People, beware of injustice, for injustice shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment.'”

These verses from the Quran and Hadiths highlight the importance of justice in Islam, both as a personal responsibility and as a means of building a just society. Muslims are encouraged to be witnesses for Allah and to stand firm in justice, even if it goes against their own interests or those of their loved ones. The verses also emphasize the importance of avoiding oppression and treating others with fairness and kindness, as these are key components of righteous behavior.

The Story of the Woman Seeking Justice from the Caliph Umar (RA)

Once, during the caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), a woman came to him seeking justice. She told Umar that her husband had divorced her and left her with no means of support. She had no family to turn to and was now homeless and destitute.

Umar was deeply moved by the woman’s plight and decided to take action. He immediately ordered that a portion of the state treasury be set aside to provide for the woman’s basic needs. He also instructed his officials to investigate the case and determine whether the woman’s husband had acted unjustly.

After the investigation, it was discovered that the woman’s husband had indeed acted unjustly and had divorced her without cause. Umar then ordered that the husband be punished for his wrongdoing and that the woman be given a fair settlement to compensate for her losses.

The woman was grateful for the justice that Umar had provided her, and she praised him for his fairness and compassion. She said, “May Allah bless you, O Umar! You have given me back my rights and treated me with kindness and respect. You have truly fulfilled the duty of a just ruler.”

This story illustrates the importance of justice and compassion in Islam, and it shows how the early Muslim leaders like Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) strove to uphold these values in their governance. It also highlights the importance of providing for the basic needs of those in need, as this is considered an important aspect of justice in Islam.
